What Is The Gut-Skin Axis?
The Gut-Skin Axis explained & how it affects your skin.
Aug 26, 2022
If you are wondering what is the Gut-Skin Axis and how does it affect your skin, let’s get into it. Understanding how your body works is vital in order to keep it healthy inside and out. The skin is the largest organ in our bodies, so everything happening on the inside, will affect the outside.
Let's talk about supplements and food that can help you improve the relationship between your skin and your gut.
What Is The Gut-Skin Axis?
The Gut-Skin Axis is the relationship between your body ( the gut microbiome to be more specific ) and your skin (source). But we can get a little more in depth about it, firstly, we need to understand the microbiome, a common buzzword in the health, beauty and lifestyle industries.
What is the microbiome?
The microbiome is a biome/world of microbes that live symbiotically with you and your body. Some of them are good, some of them are not so good (source), but they ideally remain in balance with themselves, and with you. The microbiome can also be referred to as microbiota if we are talking about multiple microorganisms (source).
How can the microbiota be good but also not good at the same time? A good example of a happy microbiota is that it stimulates the immune system by breaking down potentially toxic food compounds and absorbing nutrients. Healthy diet equals a healthy microbiota. These nutrients will then spread across the body (source).
If the microbiota is not doing so well, it can be because pathogens have reached the gut. Just like consuming healthy foods will support the microbiota with nutrients, having a poor diet can populate your gut with pathogens. Not enough nutrients in the microbiota, means there will not be enough nutrients to send around the body. It can cause diseases in the gut and some larger organs like our skin (source).
How Does The Gut Affect Our Skin?
Your diet and lifestyle can affect the state of your gut. An unhealthy gut will impact all organs of the body and its state may be reflected on your skin as an imbalance in our microbiota can lead the gut into an inflammatory state. Basically if the microbes in your gut are annoyed, you’ll likely feel the consequences.
But a balanced microbiota is very helpful when we have good gut health. It supports breaking down and keeping vitamins and all the other good things that come with a healthy diet. It’s important to remember that food plays an important role in your gut health. If your diet lacks food that can benefit the microbiota such as fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains, there will not be enough nutrients to share across the body, including organs like the skin. Another way to put it is: you are what you eat.
