Inspired by the lack of time and resources for male self-care during their epic road trips, car-loving friends Imran and Rik founded Telfer & Ross as a no-nonsense beard, shaving, and skin care brand. We caught up with co-founder, Rik Kirk, to share the story of Telfer & Ross. 

Tell us a bit about yourself and how you are involved with Telfer & Ross. Where are you from and what’s your favourite TV Show? 

I’m Rik, co-owner at Telfer & Ross with Imran. I’m from Buxton - where the spring water also comes from - but now reside in south Manchester. With a background in design for 25 years, I created the branding,overall look and feel.  In my spare time I like listening to music and watching too much Gas Monkey Garage for inspiration on how to build your business whilst having fun doing it.

When did you start Telfer & Ross?

The idea of Telfer & Ross came about in the last half of 2020 - various lockdown antics had Imran and I accelerate our idea to reality, launching our brand and products in the Spring of this year (2021).

What is the origin story? What inspired you to launch Telfer & Ross? 

Imran and I have been friends for several years, brought together over our love of cars.  We met at a car meet, and have been friends ever since. During our road trips together we had flirted with the idea of setting up a business. It’s taken us a few years to figure out exactly what that business was going to be, but after our last road trip together we decided on the male grooming sector.  We were in and out of different hotels every day and with little time for personal care we decided to develop a no-nonsense line of beard, shaving and skin care products – dedicated to men who want to look good when it counts and to give them the confidence we desire by taking better care of ourselves.

What is unique about your products?

We’re an aspirational brand that sits comfortably on the shelves of a boutique or luxury shop but our products are as affordable as everyday products to most men.  The name Telfer & Ross was chosen as it just sounds so familiar, like you’ve seen it before, even used it before, making you feel comfortable with your product choice.  Our clean packaging along with clear and consistent brand messaging reflects the quality products inside.  With Telfer & Ross you are getting quality every time, every day.

Describe in only three words what Telfer & Ross means to customers.

Do you have any upcoming product launches? If so, can you tell us more about them? 

Our customers have asked for hair products, so we have launched a barber style hair cream. 

This styling cream combines flexibility with control, creating a natural groomed look. It works really well with medium to long length hair. 

What is your favourite product from another brand that is not currently available in your own product portfolio? 

Personally I’ve always liked the No7 Energising Face Scrub - I try to use it once a week to give my skin a deeper clean.  This is definitely a product I’d like to bring to Telfer & Ross.

If you want great-looking skin or hair you’ve got to apply the same principle and stick to a routine every day.  There is no ‘silver bullet’, no magic cream, that will instantly make you look ten years younger.

But a consistent skincare and haircare regime that you follow every day will give you a healthy and confident overall look.

What celebrity do you think does the best beauty, grooming or self-care? 

For me, as a basketball fan, this has to be LeBron James, one of the greatest athletes of his generation.

He always says “consistency” is his secret to success.

Whether it’s training his body, recovering from injury, eating well, sleeping or keeping his body very clean, he credits consistency as the reason that he is still at the top of his game.

What’s one career you wish you could have? 

International DJ - I’ve been heavily into house music and clubs since my late teens. I started DJing in my mid-30s (a little late to the party, please excuse the pun, it was intended), playing at a few clubs but mainly for fun. 

5 years from now, if money were no object, where would you like to see your brand and what would it represent? 

As mentioned earlier, part of the inspiration for T&R was from travelling and the hotels we visited, so to see our products used by hotels throughout Europe (even worldwide) would be amazing.  A great shampoo and body wash in that wall dispenser always goes down well when you jump in a hotel shower.  That would take things from our inspiration point full circle I guess.

Finally, what is an easy life hack that you think men should use to look and feel better? 

Shave after you shower.

This is when your face’s bristles have been softened by steam, and your skin’s follicles are open – this gives you a much closer, smoother shave.  If you’re pressed for time but still want all the benefits of a post shower shave, invest in a fogless mirror and shave in the shower! Now that’s a win-win.
