Groom & A is our latest interview series with some of the key people behind the brands you see on Humanery. The brands that feature on our platform share our ethos of encouraging men to activate healthy self-care routines, and to integrate personal grooming into their lives. 

This time, we talked to the co-founder of Ra. Men’s Care, Raheem Mizra, about the core principles behind the brand and how Ra. was inspired by Raheem's desire to reclaim control of his appearance. 

Tell us a bit about yourself and how you are involved with Ra. Where are you from and what’s your favourite TV Show? 

Hello, my name is Raheem, I am the founder and Chief Executive of Ra. Men’s Care. I was brought up in the quiet town of Basingstoke (just outside of London).

My favourite TV show is Prison Break, the hit US series about character Michael Schofield (Wentworth Miller) who gets himself into prison to help break his brother out. The mind of Michael Schofield is just something to marvel at. The way he engineers his escape plan with such precision makes for great TV.

When did you start Ra. men’s care?

I started Ra. men’s care in February 2020, however, research which inspired our maiden product range began as early as 2017 before the idea of Ra. had even been conceived. Our products were made available to the public in October 2020.

What is the origin story? What inspired you to launch Ra.?

I started Ra. as I was at a stage in life where I wanted to reclaim control of my appearance and outwardly present myself in a manner that I felt aligned with who I was on the inside. To live confidently, leading what I thought was a healthy life, I wanted my skin to reflect that but often found my skin unpredictably breaking out or flaring up (and usually always at the wrong times i.e. just ahead of some type of social gathering or event).

When looking for skincare solutions, I was left aghast at how few performance products existed in the men’s market. Of course there were products available, but many of these prioritised quick fixes instead of sustainable cures, so I set out to formulate and curate my own solution: Ra.

What is unique about your products?

Our products stand out in the men’s skincare market as the mode of function is centred on skin cycle optimisation. Our research was obsessed with giving men access to products which were effective. After generations of mistrust in the cosmetics industry, we put a concerted effort on defining strong brand principles. These are: 

  • If an ingredient doesn’t benefit skin, it doesn’t make it into Ra. 

  • We are a cruelty free business, skin care and self care must be pain free.

  • Products are designed with results in mind, but sustainability at heart.

To satisfy these principles we knew that we had to consider all factors. From product convenience, application experience, and the lifestyles our users lead. If guys are seeking healthier looking skin it requires consistent commitment to a routine, however, complicated routines mean men can’t always stick to these. This is why we have aspired to make our routine as easy as possible. Additionally, we know people live busy lives where UV rays cannot be avoided so we have put sun protective factors into our products - even if people didn’t know they needed them, they very much do!

Describe in only 3 words what your brand means to customers?

Credibility, Reliability, Gravity.

Do you have any upcoming product launches? If so, can you tell us more about them?

Now that would be telling… Without giving away too much, our product launch process is very thorough and we tend to explore multiple routes to the same final destination. What I can say at this time is that our next product is something every man needs and will be used every day. This will be our first product which we expect to see most men carrying around with them all day (small enough to fit in a pocket). We will leave it at that for now...any guesses?

What is your favourite product from another brand that is not currently available in your own product portfolio?

One product I am obsessed with is actually a discontinued solid perfume by socially responsible cosmetics brand, Lush. All Good Things is a fragrance unlike any other: a rich leathery, smokey scent with a rosey, floral undernote makes for an incredible smelling experience. The convenience of having this fragrance in a solid stick which can easily and discreetly be applied directly to skin just adds to its great usability.

Which celebrity do you think has the best beauty or self-care principles?

This is so tough to choose from. For us, we are huge Roger Federer fans. Throughout his 20 year career, Roger has demonstrated it’s more than just his tennis which can stand the test of time! He is hailed as the most stylish tennis player (perhaps even sports person) of all time. Despite the conditions he plays in and the sun he has been exposed to, Roger has aged like a fine swiss wine which we suspect is due to taking skincare seriously. Additionally, Roger’s timeless medium length, textured hairstyle stands confidently in an era of skin fades and crewcuts. However, above all, the class and decorum which Federer carries himself is truly a stylish class act.

What’s one career you wish you could have? 

In another life, it would have been awesome to pursue a career as an architect or interior designer. Our environments can have a massive influence on our mood, mindsets, and much more. As well as dressing ourselves and practicing good grooming habits, the way we design and structure our work/living spaces is just as important to leading a healthy life. Building environments to reflect people's personality would be a great privilege and seeing their reactions afterwards would be a great gift.

5 years from now, if money were no object, where would you like to see your brand and what would it represent?

In 5 years, it would be great to see the Ra. name become synonymous with intelligent solutions that contribute to improving man’s everyday life. We would love to expand the range to capture an entire man's morning / night routine. From teeth to skin to hair and everything in between.

Finally, what is an easy life hack that you think men should use to look and feel better? 

This one may not be easy, but is sure worth it...cold shower at least once a week!

Your hair and skin will honestly thank you for it. Cold water will give you hair that looks less stressed and has a silky shine (this is due to chemical bonds between the fibres that make hair becoming more tightly wrapped when subject to cold water vs being slightly unravelled when exposed to hot water or heat).

Pores of the skin when under the action of cold water actually appear smaller which means there is less chance of bacteria getting in leading to breakouts. Furthermore, cold water is great for promoting circulation and also induces a series of mood boosting benefits such as the release of noradrenaline.

Just take long deep breaths and let the cold water cover you. A few minutes a day for a happy healthier life.
