You've taken the first step into learning more about your skin type, you landed here. Regardless of your skin type, you should always have a routine in place to improve your skin health, or if you are already there, keep it healthy and radiant. Sensitive skin is a very common skin type, you might have even heard about it before. You can keep learning and trying to improve your skin by keeping an eye out for products and discoveries. Since you are here, shall we get a little more in-depth about it and what's best for men with sensitive skin?

What Does it Mean to Have Sensitive Skin?

Men with sensitive skin will notice how it might take a little more research and experimenting when it comes to taking care of our skin.

Sensitive skin is a skin type, just like combination, dry and oily skin, but with different needs. It means your skin is extra reactive to other products, foods and the environment you are in. Some men with other skin types may not have such an exaggerated reaction to everyday products, but those with sensitive skin need to pay extra attention to what they eat and put on their skin if anything.

You may not see an immediate reaction but you can definitely feel it when you have sensitive skin. Things like itching, burning, stinging and a tight sensation can be present (source).

Men with normal skin can also experience a combination of both normal and sensitive if their skin barrier is disturbed and you may not have an appropriate skincare routine (source). Hence why a routine, regardless of skin type, is very important.

Not only can harsh products worsen sensitive skin, but as mentioned, so can the environment. Many men exposed to cold or dry weather will notice its negative effects on their skin.

How do Men Deal With Sensitive Skin?

Men do tend to have thicker skin than women, so having sensitive skin is slightly less probable in men but not impossible. Knowing what it is like to have sensitive skin and what can make the symptoms worse is very important in order to work out how men deal with sensitive skin. Your skin is just another organ in the body that needs care.

You may need to experiment with a few different products before you find the correct ones to help you keep your skin looking and feeling healthy. Always keep an eye on the ingredients list of what you are buying, have a consistent and gentle routine, and check how those products may affect your skin.

Routine for Men’s Sensitive Skin

Now that you've taken the first step into learning more about your skin, getting a routine in place and starting to take care of your skin will be much easier. It's time for you to take a look at some ingredients to help you find the right products to add to your skincare routine.

Your routine would include products designed specifically for sensitive skin, intending to cause little to no negative effects, but instead, help protect your skin. Keep in mind that some men may have a higher sensitivity to their skin than others, so products may work for some but not for everyone with sensitive skin.

Use a gentle cleanser for men in the morning and evening to help remove dirt and bacteria that might have built on the skin. Moisturisers are vital to keeping sensitive skin protected, even better if you use a moisturiser with SPF, to help protect it from the sun - yes, you should be using SPF every single day, regardless of skin type. For dry and sensitive skin, ideally, you would be moisturising twice a day (source).

What to Avoid if You Have Sensitive Skin?

If you've started to look for your next products, there are a few things you should try and avoid. Things like harsh exfoliants or chemical peels will most definitely not give you or your skin a good time. It's important to be cautious with routines and products as damaging the skin is a lot easier and faster than fixing the damage. Some of these ingredients may negatively affect the skin by

Sulphates

It may damage proteins and weaken the skin's barrier.

Alcohol

Products with alcohol can be very drying to the skin and may cause inflammation.

Fragrance

One of the most common causes of irritation on the skin, especially on sensitive skin.

Chemical Sunscreen

Instead of using a chemical sunscreen, it might be safer and not as harsh to use mineral blockers to protect your skin.
